HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER este o comedie despre Ted, in general si, mai exact despre cum el s-a indragostit. Totul a inceput atunci cand prietenul cel mai bun al lui Ted, Marshall, arunca bomba, cum ca o va cere de sotie pe actuala prietena, cu care era de mult timp, o educatoare, Lily.

In acest moment Ted realizeaza ca ar fi indicat ca si el sa fac pasul cel mare, lucru ce implica mai intai sa-si gaseasca, marea iubire. Cel care il ajuta in marea cautare, este  prietenul lui, Barney, un burlac convins, cu pareri mereu surprinzatoare si cu diferite metode de a cunoaste femei, care nu dau niciodata gres. Cand Ted o cunoste pe Robin, este sigur ca e vorba de dragoste la prima vedere, dar destinul are un cuvant de spus in ceea ce il priveste.
