Ryan Atwood este un adolescent tulburat din Los Angeles, care se trezeste singur dupa ce este dat afara din casa proprie. El gaseste un loc unde sa stea, intr-o casa eleganta a familiei Cohen, in comunitatea bogata a Newport Beach, the O.C. (Orange County), California.
Ryan este compatimit de Sandford “Sandy” Cohen, un avocat care l-a reprezentat pe Ryan in trecut pentru greselile sale. Dar sotia lui Sandy, Kristen, este constienta de trecutul lui criminal, si este ingrijorata de acest nou musafir. Filu sotilor Cohen, Seth, se imprieteneste cu Ryan repede si ii arata zona comunitatii si vice versa pentru Ryan, dandu-i sfaturi in viata si dragoste. Ryan se indragosteste de Marissa Cooper, o fata vecina cu el, care locuieste mai jos pe strada lui si are probleme cu tatal ei, Jimmy, si mama ei, Julie. Deasemenea, prietena cea mai buna a Marisei, Summer, este inconstienta de faptul ca Seth o place, in timp ce pe ea o apuca o simpatie catre Ryan.
